Kaspersky Banned in US
Russian cybersecurity and antivirus software Kaspersky was banned in the US due to national security concerns. On June 20, 2024, the Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) announced a Final Determination prohibiting Kaspersky Lab, Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of a Russia-based anti-virus software and cybersecurity company, from directly or indirectly providing anti-virus software and cybersecurity products or services in the United States or to U.S. persons. According to the announcement, the prohibition also applies to Kaspersky Lab, Inc.’s affiliates, subsidiaries and parent companies (together with Kaspersky Lab, Inc., “Kaspersky”).”
Background of Kaspersky Lab and Ties with Russia
Kaspersky Lab, founded by Eugene Kaspersky in 1997, quickly gained a reputation for its innovative cybersecurity solutions. However, its headquarters in Russia and close ties to the Russian government have sparked controversy and suspicion, especially in light of escalating geopolitical tensions. “Kaspersky has operated in the U.S. for more than 20 years, contributing to the nation’s cybersecurity goals by safeguarding organizations and individuals against ever-evolving cyberthreats,” Kaspersky said. In light of the U.S. legal requirements, the company has carefully examined the situation and made this difficult decision, as business opportunities in the country are no longer viable.
